"YOU HAVE A HERNIATED DISC." Scary words to hear from your healthcare provider! When most patients hear those words they typically think of another frightening word... "SURGERY"! Rest assured that most cases of herniated discs or bulging discs are NOT surgical cases. In fact, many people have a disc bulge right now and have no clue that they have it because they're not experiencing any symptoms. It's when that person overdoes it typically with bending or lifting wrong or sitting too long with poor posture that the disc bulge shows it's ugly face in the form of neck or back pain which may or may not radiate pain / numbness / weakness into the arms or legs.
I'm surprised when some patients have no clue that we can help their disc herniation when in fact we have a very good success rate at treating these. A combination of gentle spinal manipulation, cervical or lumbar traction (decompression), posture recommendations and specific exercises typically produces good results. This treatment combination reduces the disc herniation and thereby relieves the symptoms of neck or back pain and / or extremity pain, numbness or weakness.
In the treatment of a disc herniation, one should always start with non-invasive conservative treatments such as Chiropractic or Physical Therapy. If unsuccessful, then and only then should epidural steroid injections or surgery be looked at as an option. If you or someone you know is suffering needlessly from a disc problem, give us a
